AQW 39180/22-27 Written question to the Minister for the Economy

To ask the Minister for the Economy to detail any support available for local councils to (i) develop night-time economy provision; and (ii) support the retention of small to medium-sized businesses that serve the night-time economy, including the food-to-go sector, to stop the loss of these businesses from town centres, due to the inability to revitalise derelict commercial premises or expand existing premises, due to the lack of wastewater and sewage connections.

Answer

The Minister for Infrastructure is responsible for wastewater.

My Department, alongside Tourism NI and the three Belfast Business Improvement Districts, has commissioned research to better understand the issues affecting the night-time economy. While the final report is anticipated soon, the interim findings suggest reliable late-night transport, safety, tourism and licensing are key factors affecting the success of our night-time economy.

I was pleased to work with Minister Kimmins, Executive colleagues and Belfast City Council to secure funding for a late-night public transport pilot scheme in Belfast. Initial feedback on uptake is positive and my hope is that this pilot will lead to advancements in late-night transport provision across our region, thereby supporting our night-time economy across our local council areas.

My Department and partner organisations continue to provide a broad range of supports to businesses to help them be more competitive through energy efficiency, innovation, skills, and exploring new markets.
